In this session, Brian Atkinson will guide practitioners on how to use the Survivors First Act (O.C.G.A. § 17-10-21) to vacate convictions obtained against trafficking survivors as a result of their victimization. The program will cover recent changes to the law, step-by-step procedures for filing and litigating vacatur motions, and practical tips for working with survivor-clients. Attendees will also be introduced to opportunities through the CEASE Clinic’s partnership with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council of Georgia, including how to connect with incarcerated survivors in need of pro bono representation and receive guidance and support from CEASE in doing this work.
